HISTORY
Located in a 19th century carmen at the entrance of the Generalife, Jardines Alberto offers its customers a place to relax after visiting the Alhambra. You can enjoy our varied cuisine with typical local dishes on any of our three terraces overlooking the walls and towers of the Alhambra.
The carmen, called ‘Karm’ by the Muslims, is a type of typical Granadian house that began to be built after the Christian Conquest in the 16th century. The carmen is a typical Granadian space where the house, the garden and the orchard are mixed, all hidden from the view of the neighbours.
The Jardines Alberto restaurant is located in the Carmen where the 19th century Granada painter Ramón Carazo lived.
Alberto Carazo, son of the famous artist, adapted the Carmen in the 50’s as a party hall with a flamenco tablao, being one of the pioneers in Granada and receiving the Premio al Mérito Turístico in 1967, awarded by the then Minister of Information and Tourism Mr. Manuel Fraga Iribarne. In 1985, El Carmen was converted into a restaurant with a garden and three terraces overlooking the walls of the Alhambra.
Since 2005, the children of Alberto Carazo and grandchildren of the famous painter, run this restaurant where you will always be welcome.
THE RESTAURANT, A CARMEN HOME OF RAMÓN CARAZO
Ramón Carazo was a painter from Granada at the end of the 19th century (1896-1936), and is considered one of the masters of Spanish portraiture. He was a pupil at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts (Madrid).
Carazo was an artist who belonged to the academicist circle of the early 20th century in Granada, a school that was characterised by its portraits, especially of picturesque and popular figures.
He was a disciple of José Larrocha and Cecilio Plá and a contemporary of Francisco Soria Aedo, Mariano Bertuchi and Rodriguez Acosta.
